Builders Club
Builders Club offers such opportunities to
middle school-aged students. Its goal is to
develop leadership qualities in young people
through experiences in volunteer community
service.
As the motto "We Build" indicates,
Builders Club is for young people who want to
take positive, constructive action to build a
better world for themselves and others. Builders
Club members experience the thrill of
accomplishment and the satisfaction of knowing
their efforts make a difference for those they
help.
The
Objects of Builders Club explain it best:
- To
provide opportunities for working together
in service to school and community.
- To
develop leadership potential
- To
foster the development of strong moral
character.
How
Do I Benefit?
Middle
school years span the transition from childhood
to young adulthood. It is a crossroads in life.
Young people need and want new challenges that
direct their personal development toward the
fulfillment of a happy and productive life.
Builders Club provides a way to form sound
personal values based on experiences in
meaningful community service activities.
Builders
Club members learn by doing. They learn
organization, teamwork, and leadership. Most
importantly, they learn that concerned
individuals working together can make a
difference.
What does Builders Club do?
The
possibilities are without limit. Whether it's
many small projects or a few big ones, Builders
Clubs make their presence known. Builders Clubs
have funded wildlife preserves, purchased
computer equipment and security systems for
schools, tutored young children in Reading is
Fundamental and Head Start programs, provided
funding for cancer research centers, provided
hurricane and earthquake relief, and supported
Special Olympics, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation,
Make-A-Wish Foundation, and Ronald McDonald
House, among dozens of others.
Builders
Club members are especially fond of helping
their sponsoring Kiwanis club with projects such
as the Kiwanis International Worldwide
Service Project, a fund-raising effort with
UNICEF to virtually eliminate iodine deficiency
disorders throughout the world.
Who
sponsors a Builders Club?
Builders Club is sponsored
by Kiwanis International, a nonreligious, nonpolitical, worldwide organization
of business professional men and women dedicated to community service. Kiwanis
members recognize that young people today want to take an active role in solving
problems and meeting needs of the world around them--whether that world is as
small as a classroom or as large as a city.
One important way
Kiwanis clubs serve their local communities is by sponsoring and supporting
service organizations for young people. In high school, there's Key Club; in
college, Circle K. In elementary schools, there's K-Kid clubs, and for Europe's
young adults, there's Kiwajunior clubs. And, of course, Builders Club for middle
school students.
The Kiwanis club
organizes the Builders Club by enlisting interest from school administration,
and then underwrites costs and provides adult guidance in costs and provides
adult guidance in concert with school personnel. Key Clubs and Circle K clubs
often get involved with the Builders Club, providing excellent role models.
Sponsorship by Kiwanis, Key Club, and Circle K is a winning combination because
the ideals of voluntary service are shown by example.
